CHARLIE KIRK
On Wednesday, Charlie Kirk was assassinated in Utah while hosting an event at Utah Valley University. He was a devoted husband and father, founder of Turning Point USA, and a singular force in modern conservatism. Speaker Johnson said Charlie “brought more productive content to the free marketplace of ideas than anybody in his generation.”
On Wednesday afternoon, Speaker Johnson held a moment of silence for Charlie and his family. Following the news of his passing, Speaker Johnson said, “The idea that political violence has taken one of the strongest voices on the conservative side is a great heartbreak. Charlie was a close friend of mine and a confidant, and he will be sorely missed. And, we need every political leader to decry the violence and to do it loudly. The problem is in the human heart, and it’s gotten out of hand.” That night, Speaker Johnson joined FOX and CNN to reflect on his life and legacy.
On Friday evening, Speaker Johnson attended and spoke at a vigil for Charlie Kirk at LSU. Click here to watch.
IN THE HOUSE
This week, the House passed H.R. 3838, the Streamlining Procurement for Effective Execution and Delivery and National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026 (SPEED Act and FY26 NDAA). This bill fulfills President Trump and House Republicans’ Peace Through Strength Agenda and puts American servicemembers and their families first. Following House passage, Speaker Johnson said, “The NDAA builds on the landmark investments included in the Working Families Tax Cut, ensuring America has both the economic strength and the military power to deter our enemies and protect our interests worldwide.” Click here for Speaker Johnson’s full statement, and click here to read more about the legislation.
On Thursday, the House passed the Stop Illegal Entry Act to strengthen border security and defend the rule of law. Since President Trump secured our border and successfully deterred illegal immigration, Congress is ensuring our law enforcement and border patrol agents are properly equipped to enforce America’s laws. Following House passage of this bill, Speaker Johnson said, “This legislation includes commonsense provisions that impose serious penalties on those who repeatedly and deliberately violate U.S. immigration law – especially violent criminal aliens.” Click here for Speaker Johnson’s full statement.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
At the weekly House Republican Leadership press conference, Speaker Johnson addressed the senseless murder of a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina, the continuation of President Trump’s successful crackdown on crime, UN countries considering recognizing Palestinian statehood, and the government funding deadline. On Thursday, Speaker Johnson and House Minority Leader Jeffries laid a wreath at the 9/11 Memorial in the United States Capitol, which honors the brave passengers of Flight 93–the hijacked airplane that was potentially headed towards our nation’s capital on September 11, 2001. Following the ceremony, Speaker Johnson said, “America saw the face of evil; yet in our grief and anger, we revealed the best in ourselves. On this solemn anniversary, we take heart in knowing that even in that dark hour, the American people answered with all that is good, decent, and enduring in the human spirit.”
